The Verdict

Paid Barchart users describe the screener the same way repeatedly: the most variables, the most flexibility, and columns that mostly hold up against other sources. That is the product, and at $239.95 a year for Premier it is competitively priced against anything with comparable depth. Two things cut against it. Users on r/options report option prices that are sometimes wrong, occasionally looking as though calls and puts have been switched — and a screener you cannot fully trust is a screener you have to check. And the export, which is why a lot of people subscribe, does not always match what you see on screen, because some data providers restrict what leaves the site. Sort by a column, download it, find 'n/a' where the numbers were.

The Watch-Out

The 30-day free trial rolls into monthly billing at the full monthly rate, not the annual rate. Let Premier lapse out of the trial and you are paying $29.95 a month, a 50% premium over the $19.95 effective monthly price you get by actively choosing the $239.95 annual plan. The free tier's 20-page-views-per-day cap is also the most aggressive limit in this set — it throttles browsing itself, not just the tools. And Plus is a bad choice for options traders at any price: the entire options suite is Premier-only.

“I use the free Barchart daily. It's easy to setup charts using fundamentals and other resources. One thing I have found is option prices are not always correct.”

Barchart

Treat Barchart as a discovery layer and your broker as the source of truth. The screener's job is to hand you a shortlist of twelve tickers out of four thousand, and it is very good at that. Pricing a specific contract is a different job, and that one belongs to your broker's chain, where the quote is the one you will actually fill against. Traders who use it that way rarely complain about the data. Traders who price trades off the screen do.

“Paid member there primarily for screening capability crossed with accuracy. I've found they have the most flexible screeners with the largest number of variables with the best accuracy. I've noticed other services can struggle with company financials and even basic market measures (eg, bothered me no end that ToS IVP was really IVR).”

“I know this is old but I just looked at the barchart option prices and it was so inaccurate in that it almost looks like they have the call and put prices switched. Just wondering if others are seeing the same. I'm comparing against the market bid/ask prices in trade>options in the schwab mobile app.”

“I have been subscribed to Barchart for about 6 months. Recommendation depends on your needs and how you use it. I have 6 screeners that send out a mail to me mid day market and end of day market. I use them to keep track of corrections in top 100 stocks and ETFs and also earning dates.”

“HOWEVER, I've been doing thetagang strategies for about a year and barchart did help me find some good puts to sell, but I ended up chasing high IV tickers that put me in a bad place. Their screener didn't put me in the red, but it certainly made it super easy to find high premium trades that offered a high return on capital.”

Pros and Cons

What works

  • 150-plus screener filters with more variables than any rival on our board
  • Premier's options suite covers unusual activity, flow, time and sales, IV rank and volatility tools
  • Screener results can be auto-emailed midday and at close
  • Historical downloads reach back to 2000, up to 20,000 records per download
  • Annual at $239.95 and biennial at $419.95 are aggressive prices for this depth

What doesn’t

  • Users report option prices that are sometimes incorrect, occasionally looking switched between calls and puts
  • Export can return 'n/a' for columns that display fine on screen, due to data-provider restrictions
  • The free tier caps you at 20 page views a day and 20 screener results
  • The 30-day trial converts to monthly billing at full price, not the annual rate
  • Plus buys you no options tooling at all
  • The proprietary buy and hold signals draw consistent criticism from paid users
