Is It Worth It | Will This Trading Tool Pay for Itself

Every subscription is an enemy ship with a shield worth its monthly price. Your trades are the torpedoes. Find out whether you take it down this month, or whether it escapes with your money.

Short answer

A trading tool is worth it when your edge per trade, times the trades you take, covers the subscription. Divide the monthly cost by your monthly trades to get the break-even per trade. If that number is bigger than what your journal says you make, the tool is a cost, not an edge.

Takeaway

A tool is worth it when your edge pays for it, not when the marketing says so. If you don't know your edge per trade yet, the cheapest upgrade is a trade journal.

How do you work out if a trading subscription is worth it?

Take the monthly cost and divide it by the trades you take in a month. That is the edge each trade has to produce just to pay for the tool, before you make a cent.

Then check your journal. If your average profit per trade is below that number, the tool is a cost. If it's well above, the tool may be earning its keep. Hours saved count too, but only at an hourly value you'd actually be paid.

Is annual billing worth it for trading tools?

Across the tools in this calculator, annual billing runs 13% to 39% cheaper, paid up front. It wins only if you'll still use the tool in month 12. If you're testing a tool, run the monthly plan for a month or two, then switch once it has proved itself.

Break-even questions, answered

Divide the monthly cost by the trades you take each month. That is the edge each trade has to produce just to pay for the tool. Compare it with the average profit per trade from your own journal. If the journal number is smaller, the tool costs you money.
