The Verdict

Webull scores 79, and the reason is hands-on. Its paper trading account runs on real-time market data with the full toolset, so you can rehearse a strategy on the live tape before a dollar is at risk. Webull is a competent, fast trading app whose headline is a distraction. The $0 commission is real for US-listed stocks, ETFs and ordinary equity options. What the headline hides is that the two things active traders actually need sit behind a $3.99 monthly subscription: real-time Nasdaq TotalView Level 2 and OPRA data, and a margin rate that is not punitive. Standard margin is a flat 8.74% at every balance tier, from zero to twenty-five million dollars. There is no volume discount at all. Subscribe to Premium and the same borrowing drops to 5.20%, falling to 3.90% at the top. That is not a perk, that is a toll booth. Price Webull as a $40-a-year platform and it looks reasonable. Price it as free and you will be surprised twice.

The Watch-Out

Index options cost $0.50 per contract despite the zero-commission options headline, and oversized orders add $0.10. Transferring an account in is free; transferring out costs $75. That asymmetry is a design decision, not an accident. Traders on r/Webull also report undisclosed internal order limits that support staff could not explain, and trailing stop orders that accept but do not post. Read the fee schedule before you fund.

Who this is for

The traders who get the most out of Webull.

Flip to see the list

Who this is for

  • Buy-and-hold investors who want a free account and never touch margin
  • Traders happy to pay $40 a year for Level 2 and OPRA rather than pretend data is free
  • Anyone who wants a capable mobile app without a platform fee

Who this isn't for

Where Webull is the wrong spend.

Flip to see the list

Who this isn't for

  • Margin users who skip Premium — 8.74% flat is among the worst standard rates available
  • Anyone who needs API access for automation; there is none, TradingView is the workaround
  • Active traders who cannot tolerate fills that miss a crossed limit price

The Pain It Solves

A real complaint from the trading forums, and what this tool actually does about it.

r/Webull
“Called webull to asked what is the max option sell order. Nobody knew about it. Finally a supervisor said “it’s 1500 per sell order. It is an internal policy And we don’t have to disclose such internal policies to the client!””

Webull

Assume nothing about Webull is disclosed until you have read the fee schedule and the Rule 606 order-routing disclosure, both of which Webull publishes. Then size the account to the rules you can verify rather than the rules you assume. If you intend to trade options size or use margin, treat the $40 Premium subscription as part of the cost of the account, not an upgrade — and get your position limits confirmed in writing first.

What Users Say

“Webull has stopped taking trailing stop orders. You can put them in like normal, but your order is not posted. They never informed anyone of this change in service. They also just canceled a “good-til-cancelled” order without my consent. They are not following their published policies lately.”

“It is really bad at filling orders. Many times my limit price was crossed but not filled. I still use it for stock I plan to hold long term. Not good for active trading.”

“Overall allright. Better than RH (including RH desktop). Few things i think can be better. They dont give API access. The documentation talks lot about it. But in fineprint, they say can use Webull account via TradingView for any programmatic access. They dont support as many indicators are TV does. The layouts keep going back to default layouts. Am not able to set my custom layout as default. Like each time you need to set your indicators etc. Did anyone manage to get webull api access, by contacting via email?”

“I love Webull. the only gripe I have about it is when you paper trade. it takes 3 to 4 seconds to execute a trade (slippage) when you are practicing and it kinda screws up your strategy. If you trade on margin or a cash account, real money is being traded and executes in 1-2 seconds or less. Other than that, I’ve been very profitable with them.”

“Only really serious issue with Webull is dividends for US stocks gets paid 2-3 business days later compared to US brokerages like Robinhood or Fidelity (Webull is a Chinese owned app). For example if the dividend payment day is on a Friday you'll get the dividend payment on that Friday on Robin Hood or Fidelity but with Webull the funds won't show up in your account until Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week.”

Pros and Cons

What works

  • Paper trading runs on real-time market data with the full toolset, so you can rehearse a strategy before funding
  • $0 commission on US-listed stocks, ETFs and standard equity options is genuinely $0
  • Premium at $40 a year is cheap for Nasdaq TotalView Level 2 plus OPRA
  • No account minimum, and incoming ACAT transfers cost nothing
  • Cash, margin and IRA accounts across mobile, desktop and web without a platform fee

What doesn’t

  • Standard margin is a flat 8.74% with no volume discount — Premium is effectively mandatory to borrow
  • Level 2 depth and real-time OPRA options data are paid add-ons; only Level 1 stock quotes are free
  • $75 to transfer out against $0 to transfer in
  • No API. Programmatic access is routed through TradingView, which the fine print admits
  • Payment for order flow is a named revenue line in Webull's own disclosures
